In December 1971, the rulers of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al-Ain, Ajman, Sharjah, & Umm al-Quwain decided to unite and lay down the idea of UAE. Later in February 1972, Ras Al Khaimah decided to join them and become a single unit. The idea of united settlement in UAE began after the British declared their desire to withdraw from colonies of the eastern Mediterranean. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum held a meeting, and they decided to unite. They also invited the other Gulf Emirates to come together for the union. After the British left in 1968, the National Day celebrations started three years later in 1971. When the Emirates Federal Constitution approved the principle on Dec 1, 1971. And the next day, the seventh emirate also decided to join in. Therefore, each year, 2nd December celebrates the National Day of UAE.
