Istanbul

Day 2
Half-Day City Tour of Istanbul
Enjoy a tasty breakfast and head on for a fascinating half-day tour of Istanbul. The city embraces you with its historical landmarks and cultural sites. Visit the Roman-era Hippodrome of Constantinople. This is a public arena that was the center of sporting activities in the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The word hippodrome comes from the Greek ‘hippos’ for ‘horse’ and ‘dromos’ for ‘way’. The arena was for centuries the site for chariot races. Today the area is called Sultanahmet Meydani or Sultanahmet Square. The Meydani has four main monuments; the German Fountain of Wilhelm II, the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpentine Column or Spiral Column, and the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque) which was built by the Ottoman architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha. He became the pupil of Mimar Sinan, the most celebrated architect of Turkey. Until the 19th century, the Blue Mosque was the traditional point for the pilgrimage to Mecca. Witness the Hagia Sophia Museum which was formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia, a Christian Orthodox church. Emperor Justinian constructed this beautiful place of worship as a basilica in the 6th century. It is considered an architectural marvel of Byzantine architecture style. Proceed onwards to the Grand Bazaar, which is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. The covered streets of the attractive shopping center have nearly 4000 shops that sell antiques, jewelry, gold, carpets, leatherwear, and souvenirs. In case Hagia Sophia is closed, being a Monday, the tour will take you to visit the Basilica Cistern that lies beneath the city of Istanbul (subject to change). Blue Mosque is closed on Friday and the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sunday. Overnight stay in Istanbul.
