The word 'Azerbaijan' literally means 'protector of fire'; the country is abundant in oil and natural gas; it was a center of fire worshipping; and fire has always been one of the symbols of our capital, Baku, which today is reflected in the amazing Flame Towers.
Azerbaijan is a landlocked country in Southwestern Asia located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bounded by the Caspian Sea, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Iran. 3rd Day: - Half Day Absheron (Fire Temple and Burning Mountain) Tour
- Standing 30 km from the center of Baku, on the southeastern outskirts of the village of Surakhany on Absheron Peninsula is the temple of Zoroastrians - Ateshgah (literally “The House of Fire”, “The Place of Fire”). The territory of the temple is known to the world due to its unique natural phenomenon - the burning of natural gas (gas, breaking onto the surface, lights up after contacting oxygen). The temple is a pentagonal structure consisting of 26 cells and one room surrounded by the battlement with the entrance portal with the guest room, balakhane, above it. In the center of the courtyard there is the rotunda of the temple altar with unquenchable fire. Near the temple is the rectangular hole where the bodies of the dead Indians were burnt in the sacred fire.Next to this small village in the Absheron peninsula Mount Yanardagh is situated. The word "Yanar" in Azeri language means "burning", and "Dagh" - "mountain". And this is real a burning mountain - not metaphorically, but literally. Once in Absheron it had been a lot of places where natural gas coming out from the earth to the surface ignited spontaneously, but with the start of mass extraction of oil and gas in Absheron these places started to disappear. At present, it is the only place of this unique natural phenomenon - the output of natural gas to the surface. Later Visit the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center.
